Conan in Graphic Media
A significant amount of material featuring Conan and other creations by Robert E. Howard is being published today by various publishers. For new readers eager to explore the Hyborian Age, both the classic works referenced in previous articles of this series and the newly released editions provide excellent entry points. An intriguing aspect of reading Conan’s stories is that no specific order is required! Robert E. Howard himself remarked that people recount their life stories not in chronological order but according to the significance of their memories or the circumstances. Thus, Conan’s adventures are presented out of chronological sequence. Howard introduces Conan as a king and later recounts his earlier exploits as a thief, mercenary, pirate, and soldier. You can dive into any adventure and still thoroughly enjoy the experience.

The Titan Entertainment Group (TEG) has become Conan’s current publishing home. Under the Titan Comics label, they launched the monthly Conan the Barbarian #1 in August 2023, followed by The Savage Sword of Conan #1 in February 2024. For collectors, the limited number of issues published so far makes building a collection relatively easy. These new comics have been well-received by both critics and the public alike. (I, personally, am greatly enjoying them!) Released in October 2024, The Savage Sword of Conan – The Original Comics Omnibus Vol. 1 compiles the celebrated Marvel Comics stories. Additionally, in June 2024, Titan Books released the novels Conan: City of the Dead, the first in a planned series of new adventures penned by contemporary authors and Conan- Cult of the Obsidian Moon.

Also noteworthy is Glénat’s adaptation of classic Conan tales. The renowned French publisher has been producing graphic adaptations of Howard’s original stories, offering a fresh European perspective on the character. Glénat’s works are celebrated for their fidelity to Howard’s original spirit while incorporating distinct artistic elements. Each invited artist brings their style to Conan, resulting in some of the most visually stunning portrayals of the Bronze Cimmerian. In Brazil, these graphic novels are being published by Editora Pipoca e Nanquim, while in the United States, they are handled by Ablaze Publishing.

A New Cinematic Adaptation
Following the cult success of Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Conan the Destroyer (1984), both starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the less successful 2011 reboot featuring Jason Momoa, fans have long awaited a new cinematic adaptation worthy of the character’s legacy. Since 2012, discussions have swirled around a direct sequel to the 1980s films, titled The Legend of Conan, with Schwarzenegger reprising his iconic role. Despite initial enthusiasm and several scripts being developed, the project has faced numerous delays and obstacles, leaving its future uncertain.

Schwarzenegger, who defined the role of Conan for an entire generation, has repeatedly expressed interest in returning to the character. In several interviews, he stated his readiness to portray Conan once more, this time as an older, battle-worn king. The concept of an “elderly Conan” embarking on one last epic adventure holds significant appeal for nostalgic fans and a new audience alike. In 2018, Fredrik Malmberg, CEO of Cabinet Entertainment—the rights holder for Conan—revealed in interviews a strong interest in producing new films centered on the Cimmerian barbarian. Malmberg noted ongoing discussions with major Hollywood studios, suggesting the potential for a new film. However, concrete details regarding cast, direction, and script remain scarce.Notable names like John Milius (director of the 1982 film), Chris Morgan (writer of the Fast & Furious franchise), and David S. Goyer (writer of Batman Begins and Blade) have been rumored as potential contributors to upcoming Conan projects.
One of the most discussed aspects of new Conan adaptations is how they will frame the character in a modern context. Conan’s tales are renowned for their dark tone, brutal action, and philosophical depth. Adapting these elements for contemporary audiences may require some reinterpretation, a prospect that raises concerns about preserving the character’s essence. Ideally, any new portrayal would offer fresh material while remaining true to the core of the Cimmerian barbarian.
The success of fantasy series like Game of Thrones and The Witcher has influenced the planning of new Conan adaptations. High production values, complex characters, and intricate world-building in these series serve as a blueprint for creating a Conan adaptation that appeals to a wide audience while honoring its literary origins.
Perhaps a TV Series

Rumors about a Conan-based TV series gained traction in 2018, when it was announced that Amazon Prime was developing a high-budget show inspired by Robert E. Howard’s original stories. Produced by Ryan Condal, Miguel Sapochnik (director of Game of Thrones episodes), and Warren Littlefield, the series aimed to capture the essence of Conan’s adventures by exploring his origins and his exploits in a brutal, perilous world.
Though the news was met with excitement, significant updates on the series’ progress have been lacking. Many speculate that delays may be due to rights issues, changes in the creative team, or the inherent challenges of adapting such an iconic and multifaceted character.
Conclusion
While no official confirmations have yet materialized, the ongoing speculation about new Conan adaptations for film and TV continues to fuel fans’ imaginations. Whether through a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger or a lavishly produced TV series, the possibility of seeing Conan’s adventures brought back to life remains tantalizing. These adaptations promise to continue the Cimmerian barbarian’s legacy, offering new audiences the opportunity to experience the epic grandeur of his tales.
